A man took Puja to the border with strict instructions to lie: “Tell the authorities I am your husband, and your family lives in India.”
Puja had been born into poverty with a dad who was an alcoholic and abusive toward her. Instead of staying, she had left home to live with her sister while looking for a job to provide for herself. To her great relief, she soon met a man who promised her a job, saying she could even stay with his friend in India.
As Puja approached the Nepal-India border with this man, our partners at the border patrol station saw some red flags. They stopped her for questioning. During this conversation, Puja realized she had been deceived–this man had sold her into trafficking. Instead of going on, she filed a case against him, and he was taken into custody.
Having heard her story, our partners invited Puja to stay at their safe home. Now, she’s enrolled in a barber program with a fresh start, happily learning trade skills to provide for herself.
